Paquito D’Rivera with the Brazosport Jazz Orchestra
April 25, 2015 at 7:30pm
The Clarion at Brazosport College

Paquito D’Rivera defies categorization. A winner of 14 Grammy Awards, D'Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer.

Born in Havana, Cuba, D'Rivera performed at age 10 with the National Theater Orchestra, studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music and, at 17, became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony. As a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years while, at the same time, played both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. D'Rivera eventually went on to premier several works by notable Cuban composers with the same orchestra. Additionally, he was a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical ensemble, Irakere. With its explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music never before heard, Irakere toured extensively throughout America and Europe, earned several Grammy nominations (1979, 1980), as well as a Grammy in 1979.

D’Rivera's numerous recordings include more than 30 solo albums. In 1988, he was a founding member of the United Nation Orchestra, a 15-piece ensemble organized by Dizzy Gillespie to showcase the fusion of Latin and Caribbean influences with jazz. He continues to appear as guest conductor. A Grammy was awarded the United Nation Orchestra in 1991, the same year D’Rivera received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music.

D'Rivera appears as a special guest artist with the Brazosport Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, April 25. The Brazosport Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece, professional big band featuring music educators and professional musicians from the Brazosport and Greater Houston areas. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 adults, $30 seniors and $10 students and children. Advanced tickets are available through The Clarion Box Office, located on the Brazosport College campus at 500 College Drive, Lake Jackson.
