This workshop is designed to be an introductory look at what makes improvised jazz so complex and interesting. You will gain a new viewpoint on the genre, and learn to employ all of the techniques introduced. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to: jazz progressions, arpeggios, scales and modes, intervallic playing, vocabulary, thythm and syncopation, phrasing, and repertoire. We will examine these techniques within the context of the canon of recorded jazz of the past 70 years. One of the biggest barriers to entry of jazz improvisation is that it may seem intimidating to most beginners. However, you will quickloy find that, with the right tools and a guiding hand, learning to improvise can be one of the most fun and rewarding endeavors you will pursue on your instrument. This workshop is open to all instrumentalists of any level.

The workshop sessions will be held in The Clarion band room (M-124) on Thursdays from 6 - 7:30 p.m.  The cost of the workshop is $75 per person. Call The Clarion at (979) 230-3658 to register or register online at
