Jazz Improvisation: Styles and Techniques
Workshop
June 23 - June 27
David Box, Instructor
Build a foundation for approaching jazz improvisation while learning how to transcribe on your own, and how to incorporate transcription study during practice time. Topics introduced during this course will include major, minor, dominant, and blues scale applications and patterns, as well as the ii-V-I chord progression, where it occurs, and how to identify it. Blues and standard song forms will be analyzed as well as how to “realize chord changes” using scales and patterns. This course will benefit beginners and experienced players alike. As part of this course, you will have the opportunity to utilize “play-alongs” for optimized practice time, and also examine a transcription of a classic jazz standard. Please bring your instrument as all students will perform during the class. The cost of the workshop is $80 per student.

1st Annual Gator Percussion Ensemble
Camp & Concert
 July 21, 23, 25 & 27

The Gator Percussion camp is a one week thrill ride of percussion music making.  The camp will be focused on world and pop music from Trinidad, Tobago, The Americas, and more.  This camp is designed to give percussionists an opportunity to learn and grow as musicians in an ensemble as well as have fun “jamming out” on some great tunes!  Our focus will be on total inclusion for all participants on music appropriate to their skill level.  This will allow all participants, regardless of ability/experience, to focus on musical expression, ensemble, and technical concepts without feeling overwhelmed by the level of difficulty.

This year’s camp instructors are professional players and educators in the field of percussion throughout Texas.  Participants will get small and large group instruction and coaching from the camp’s highly qualified staff.

The camp will include three days of rehearsal and an afternoon concert.  All participants will receive a Gator Percussion Camp T-Shirt as well as a recording of the performance.

The cost of the Gator Percussion Ensemble Camp is $80 per student.
