College & Community Band to perform on Nov. 5

Wed Nov 1, 2017

The Brazosport College Department of Music will host an afternoon concert performance by the College and Community Band at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.

The band will be under the direction of Brian Casey and the performance will be offered at no cost to the public at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

“I am so proud to be associated with this fine ensemble as a guest conductor this year,” Casey said. “This band has a rich history of musical excellence, providing an outlet for local players and enriching our community for many years. Sunday’s concert will feature a diverse mix of very entertaining music. The program will include an exciting world-premiere performance of ‘Festive Sounds,’ composed by our very own community band member Jerry Crummel.”

Other selections scheduled to be performed on Nov. 5th include:

“Bonds of Unity March” — Karl King literally ran away from home at the age of 17 to join the circus. He went on to become a famous baritone player and composer and is best known for his tuneful marches.

“Swirling Prisms”  a contemporary piece for band written by Brian Balmages, featuring the percussion section.

“Perthshire Majesty” — a Scottish ballad for wind band by Samuel Hazo, opening with a beautiful a cappella clarinet solo and building to some beautiful full ensemble colors.

“The Music of Jerry Goldsmith”  a medley of music from the movies “Arthur,” “The Parachutes,” “Rudy” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”

“Der Lehrmeister” — Robert Sheldon’s tribute to a “Master Teacher,” set in the style of a Richard Strauss overture.

“Kivgik” —  A piece composed by Carl Strommen depicting the “Messenger Feast,” where Alaskan tribes and their villages would periodically gather to share events, stories and religious beliefs via dance, song and drumming.

“Italian Holiday” — Robert Longfield’s medley of favorite Italian songs and arias, including "O Sole Mio," "Funiculi, Funicula," "La Donna e Mobile" and "Wedding Tarantella."
