Biography

Judy Chu
Professor of Chemistry/Chemical Technology

 

I have been on the faculty at Brazosport College since 1998, teaching Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry I and II (honors), Applied Instrumental Analysis I and II, and Cooperative Education I and II. Prior to teaching, I was extensively involved in research at Rice University looking at chemical vapor deposition of diamond thin films, high temperature chemistry and spectroscopy of metal atoms, and coal pyrolysis and gasification. As such, I bring an integrated view on the importance of laboratory science and scientific discovery to my teaching.

My teaching philosophy is driven by a desire to make chemistry fascinating. I've found that once the interest is there and students feel empowered, learning comes naturally. In lecture, for example, I always emphasize how chemistry and its principles affect our everyday lives.

I'm actively involved with distance education, and currently teach introductory chemistry using the Desire2Learn course management system. With today's busy lifestyles, many students find it easier to fit an e-learning class into their schedules. But it's not for everyone! I recommend distance learning only for students who are computer-savvy and highly self-disciplined.

I earned my B.S. in chemistry from the University of Michigan and my Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. On a personal note, my husband is a chemical engineer, and we have been married for more than 40 years. We have two wonderful daughters (one is a writer and communications consultant and the other a clinical psychology professor), and four grandchildren. They love coming back home for good Chinese food and Rockets games. My hobbies include reading science fiction novels and watching sci-fi movies.​
