FIRST QUARTER - AY 2006/07

Visualizing Our World Project

Grant Recipient:  Dr. Alisa V. Petrovich

Amount Awarded:  $780

Project Description:  The "Visualizing Our World Project" provides large classroom sized maps for dual credit classes conducted at Sweeny and Columbia High Schools. It is anticipated that the large maps in the classroom will increase student awareness of the global world.  Prior to the grant award, Columbia High School did not have any maps in its college classroom; and Sweeny High School only had two small maps taped to a wall.  The portable maps are available for use by Brazosport College faculty teaching literature, government, and geography in the dual credit classrooms.

Supplying maps for the dual credit, off-campus courses complements Brazosport College's mission to give a quality education to every student.

Upgrading Anatomy and Physiology Lab to Teach Ear Anatomy

Grant Recipient:  Mickey L. Dufilho

 Amount Awarded:  $480

Project Description: The Gator Grant funds will provide funds for upgrading laboratory equipment through the purchase of two 3-D ear models to be used in teaching the anatomy and physiology of the ear.  Students will be better able to comprehend the inner-workings of the human ear through the use of the three dimensional models and related, detailed study guides.

It has become increasingly evident that hearing loss due to environmental factors and childhood infections are a medically emerging issue and one that must be included in the A&P curriculum; and, based on feedback from former students who are practicing in the allied health field, there is a need to more thoroughly teach the ear's anatomy to better prepare future students for the chosen field.

THIRD QUARTER - AY 2006/07

"Does Authentic Assessment in Biology Lab Improve Comprehension of Lecture Concepts?"
