Brazosport College’s Adult Life and Learning Program is known for providing fun and fellowship, and the spring 2013 semester expects to be more of the same.
ALLP, which is for adults age 50 and up, will begin its new schedule of classes on March 26. The classes run weekly for six weeks and end May 2. Registration is ongoing.
ALLP is geared toward helping seniors grow in a variety of ways by developing new skills and improving one’s lifestyle without the pressure normally associated with a college.
A total of 19 different classes are offered during the spring semester, ranging from clay sculpting to learning Spanish to computer courses, just to name a few.
All classes offered under the ALLP program have a one-semester fee of $45, or one can enroll with a friend and each will receive a $5 discount. Participants can choose up to eight classes for a single fee.
ALLP is also offering three new classes this semester. New classes include Basic Excel Spreadsheets, Cooking Well with Diabetes and Unusual Bible Stories.
The classes are held at the Brazosport College main campus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A minimum of six participants is required for most classes to run and others have limited space.
The class registration fee also enables participants other benefits, including use of the Brazosport College library and computers in the Learning Services area (formerly the LAC); free admission to all drama programs at the college; a 15 percent discount on lunch in the BC Commons during ALLP and admissions to the BC art gallery and The Swamp game room.
A few of the popular classes include:
Baubles, Bangles and Beads: Learn the art of creating your own jewelry and decorative items using glass beads. You will have the opportunity to make bracelets, napkin or wine glass rings, beaded forks and spoons, and more.
Clay Sculpting: This is your opportunity to learn a new hobby, be creative and work away the stresses of the day. Instructor Joe Morris will teach you the basics of sculpting with clay as you make your own figuring and vase.
Easy Gardening for the Gulf Coast: It’s your chance to try your hand at container gardening, terrarium building, and herb and vegetable gardening. The best plant selections and Gulf Coast landscaping tips will also be shared.
Tai Chi for Seniors: Tai Chi is famous for its health and healing benefits. It is a slow-moving, no-impact practice that is often referred to as meditation in motion. The daily practice reduces anxiety and stress. In this introductory course, students will learn the breathing exercises and a simplified style that can be practiced every day.
Birds: How to Find and Identify Local Avifauna: Our instructors are members of the Texas Master Naturalists and have extensive experience in bird identification, conducting field trips, nature photography and other birding skills. Several field trips are planned, and students are responsible for their own transportation.
