Brazosport College is proud to recognize Brazosport College Alumnus Al Olvera as its 2012-13 Spring Commencement speaker.
Olvera is a true example of what can be accomplished with determination, perseverance and hard work.
After coming to the United States from Mexico in 1987, Olvera enrolled at Brazosport College in 1991. He began with developmental courses in Math and English. From there, his outstanding work ethic took center stage in both his schooling and career.
While working full time in the construction industry, Olvera completed two certificates in construction management and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Construction Management at Brazosport College. Even more impressive, he didn’t just complete the requirements for his certificates and degree, he excelled in his courses, earning Dean’s List accolades, as well as graduating Cum Laude.
Olvera then went on to complete his Bachelor Degree in Industrial Management from Brazosport College and, once again, he graduated Cum Laude.
At the same time, his determination ensured he would be successful in his career.
Beginning as a construction worker, he advanced to become a project manager. He next earned a position as construction manager, followed by being named Capital Division Branch Manager in various local companies.
Today, Olvera is currently Operations Manager and Partner at Marquis Construction Services.
Olvera is also a member of various organizations, including the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineers (AACE), the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the National Insulation Association (NIA).
Olvera and his wife, Ivonne, have four children — Allen, Jeremy, Audi and Aimee — who range from 11 to 17 years old.
Brazosport College will hold its Spring Commencement ceremonies on May 11 at the Dow Academic Center on the college campus. This year’s graduation will be broken down into two commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
