Millicent Valek is president of Brazosport College and has served in this role since 1996. Her professional interests include economic development and workforce development in partnership with energy sector industries. Through her leadership, Brazosport College has been named a Leader College in the Achieving the Dream student completion agenda, has garnered the support of the community for two major facility expansions, and gained legislative authority to offer one of the first baccalaureate degrees at a Texas community college. The Brazosport College Foundation plays an increasingly significant role in supporting these critical initiatives. Most recently, Brazosport College was named one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.
Previously, she served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Arizona Western College and as Director of Faculty Development at Austin Community College.
Civic and Professional Participation
Valuing involvement in the community, Millicent serves on a number of civic boards and in leadership roles for several professional organizations. Additionally, she serves on several oversight boards for industry training programs.
A native Texan, Dr. Valek holds a Bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s degree from Texas State University. She earned her Ph.D. through the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin where she received the Distinguished Graduate Award from the College of Education.
Millicent is married to John May. Dr. Valek has one son, Mike Valek, one step-daughter, Jennifer May, and one step-son, John May, Jr.
Glad to be back in Texas, Dr. Valek proudly calls Lake Jackson home.
