Health Services Management Specialty

The Bachelor of Applied Technology - Health Services Management (HSM) program prepares graduates for entry to mid-level management positions in a health care or medical facility. Coursework focus is health care facility management principles, technological innovation in health care services, health information technology, and health care service related regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. 

Successful program graduates have content expertise in a variety of health care systems management fields including information systems, health care finance and reimbursement, risk management, legal issues, and medical staff administration.

Focus areas within the degree include risk management and quality health care, forensic science, public health, nursing supervision and management, pediatric health care administration, electronic medical records (information systems) management, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) administration, medical office management, occupational health care management, nuclear medicine services management, and clinical laboratory supervision and management.
 
The Bachelor of Applied Technology in Health Services Management Degree builds on current associate degree programs, preparing graduates for high growth job opportunities with increased earning potential.

Requirements for Admission to the Bachelor of Applied Technology Health Services Management Degree Program are as follows:
 
  • College level skills in reading, writing, and mathematics as evidenced by approved placement testing or previous college-level coursework.
  • Attained junior status, defined as having earned at least 60 college level semester credit hours and TSI Complete (Texas Success Initiative). 
  • Completed Brazosport College Application for Admission/Readmission, transcripts, forms, and satisfaction of the general institutional admission requirements.
  • Completed Brazosport College Supplemental Application for Admission to the Bachelor of Applied Technology program and approval by the Bachelor of Applied Technology Admission Committee.
 

Note 1: Admission to the Bachelor of Applied Technology program is competitive, based on such factors as GPA, completion of lower division coursework, and work history. It should be noted that not all students who meet the minimum requirements stated above will be admitted into this program. Applications are to be reviewed by the Bachelor of Applied Technology Admissions Committee and recommended to the Vice President, Academic and Students Affairs, for admission to the program.

 
Note 2: As space permits and with the permission of the program coordinator, qualified students who do not meet the admission requirements noted above, may take up to six upper division courses. Qualified students are thos who have attained junior status, have completed any necessary course prerequisites, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Junior status is achieved by having earned at least 60 college-level semester credit hours and TSI Complete (Texas Success Initiative).
 
 

Note 3: Students admitted to the program who are at junior status but have remaining to take more than 18 semester hours of lower division coursework (as noted in the required curriculum for the HSM Major) must enroll in lower division courses in their first semester(s).

 
Note 4: Students wishing to apply previously earned credits to this degree must submit requests for substitutions within the first three semesters of being enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Technology program.
 
 

Completion Requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Technology with a Major in Health Services Management

  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum 120 semester credit hours of transferable baccalaureate level education credits, of which at least 45 must be completed at Brazosport College.
  •  
  • Completion of General Education Core Curriculum (42 credit hours) and two science labs corresponding to Core science courses (2 hours).
  •  
  • Completion of at least 43 credit hours in 3000 level courses or above, of which at least 30 hours must be completed at Brazosport College.
  •  
  • Completion of all program study requirements with a minimum 2.0 grade point average (based on 4.0 scale) on all upper division courses
 

Lower Division Acadmic Requirements - 44 Hours

  • Completion of the General Education Core Curriculum (42 hours)
  •  
  • Two science labs corresponding to Core science courses (2 hours)  
 

Lower Division Technical Requirements - 31 Hours

 

Students are required to have completed an approved Associates degree in a Health profession, Office Administration, or other business-related area OR 31 semester credit hours of technical specialty coursework in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Computer Technology, Office Administration, or Marketing, or health-related courses with the following prefixes: BIOL, CMSW, CTMT, CVTT, DAAC, DMSO, DSAE, DSPE, DSVT, EMSP, ENVR, HITT, HPRS, MAMT, MDCA, MLAB, MRIT, MRMT, OSHT, OPTS, PHRA, PLAB, PMHS, PSGT, PSYT, PTHA, RADR, RNSG, RSPT, SOCW, SCWK, SRGT, and VNSG.

 

Upper Division Requirements - 45 Hours
