Brazosport College recognized as one of top 10 community colleges in nation

LAKE JACKSON — Brazosport College has been named one of the top 10 community colleges in the United States, according to the Aspen Institute.

With the distinction, Brazosport College becomes a finalist for the recognition as the most innovative and effective community college in the nation.

The 10 finalists for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence include community colleges from around the country. The winner will be announced in March, 2013.

“To be recognized as one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation is indeed an honor,” Brazosport College President Dr. Millicent Valek said. “This is an important day for us.”

“The Aspen Prize is a recognition of true commitment to student success and completing goals, such as graduation, entering the job market and successful transfers,” Valek added. “Our faculty and staff at Brazosport College set high standards for students and we are truly committed to their success, as well as their successful entry into the job market.”

The Aspen Institute selected the finalists from a pool of the top 120 community colleges (narrowed from 1,200), which was announced this past April.

“It was an honor and a surprise when we were notified that we were among the top 10 percent because this isn’t a prize that you can apply for,” Valek said of Brazosport College’s original inclusion among the top 120 community colleges. “Now to have advanced to the top 10 is an achievement we are all very proud of.”

The selection of the finalists were based on three categories — Student success in persistence, completion and transfer; consistent improvement in outcomes over time; and equity in outcomes for students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The mission of the Aspen Institute is to foster value-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues.

The Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence seeks to galvanize and accelerate efforts to improve community college student outcomes, bolstering effective leaders and enabling institutions to learn more effectively from their peers.
