CBIT LEVERAGING GRANTS TO PROVIDE FREE TRAINING:

The Center for Business/Industry Training at Brazosport College recently received news that the Texas Workforce Commission has awarded two separate Skills Development Fund grants to the college for incumbent training. Skills Development Fund grants provide state funds to directly respond to the workforce needs of Texas employers.

The first Skills Development Fund grant was awarded to the college and a Petrochemical Consortium consisting of three local companies: The Dow Chemical Company, BASF Corporation, and Huntsman. Funds will be provided for the development and delivery of an Advanced Applied Instrumentation curriculum and training for local instrumentation and electrical (I&E) technicians.
The second grant was submitted in collaboration with ConocoPhillips and provides funding for the delivery of the SkillBlocksĀ® Troubleshooting program to its refinery operators. This training provides an in-depth study of how to use dependency diagrams to analyze processes and clarify dependency of one element on another for easier identification of causes and symptoms.

Here are some brief tips so your computer doesn't get the best of you:
-
When typing try and adopt a neutral body position. Whether at the computer or desk ensure that you take frequent small breaks, relax every 5-10 minutes, RELEASE YOUR MUSCLES
-
At least once an hour get out of your chair and move.
-
Do some physical exercise, such as walking, etc.
BC EXPANDING TO MEET YOUR NEEDS:
Corporate partners can now benefit from the new jogging trail at Brazosport College, which opened on June 6th. The trail features three different scenic trails winding through a combination of beautiful wooded areas and spacious open land and varies in length from 1.5 to 3 miles. This is a great way for those traveling from out of town to keep fit and stay in shape while in the area on business.

The new BASF Center for Process Technology Building will begin hosting classes this fall for students enrolled in Process Technology courses. ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM TEAM WINS BC TEAM INNOVATION AWARD:

CBIT's 2008 Brazoria County Economic Symposium Team was co-winner of this year's Brazosport College "Team Innovation Award." Team Innovation Awards are given to college teams with projects that show innovation, enthusiasm, exceptional effort and professionalism.
The "Winds of Change" symposium was a joint effort between the college's Center for Business/Industry Training and TDECU, and was held at The Clarion and Corporate Learning Center at Brazosport College. The event included guest speakers Lt. Colonel Oliver North, Herb Meyer and Dr. Ray Perryman, as well as several local speakers.
CBIT's team was led by Nancy Williams and involved all CBIT staff and several other campus groups. The economic symposium faced a number of daunting challenges and conquered them without hesitations. One of the most amazing accomplishments is that the event was held on September 29, just mere weeks after Hurricane Ike made landfall. Thanks to the efforts of groundskeepers, maintenance, and CBIT staff, the event still went off smoothly and efficiently and was considered a success by all who attended.

Pictured are Brazosport College President Millicent Valek; economic symposium team members Nancy Williams, Donna Thomson, Cheryl Herbst, Kathy Tomlinson and Jeanie Grahmann; and Dean of Human Resources and Payroll Dr. Herb Miles.
