Troubleshooting
The SkillBlocks Troubleshooting courses have been exclusively developed by the Center for Business/Industry Training (CBIT) and utilizes a problem solving methodology that promotes systematic troubleshooting in real-time.

The methodology assists operators in solving complex problems quickly to minimize lost production by dividing upset indicators into cause and symptoms.  By providing a consistent, logical approach to troubleshooting with common terminology, plant personnel can work efficiently when a problem develops.

Self-paced Troubleshooting Course
The self-paced SkillBlocks Process Technology Skills (PTS) curriculum targets incumbent operators with three to five years experience.  The Troubleshooting course is the capstone of the curriculum and requires application of the skills and knowledge addressed in the other courses of the curriculum.

Instructor-led Introduction to Troubleshooting
In response to requests from industry leaders, CBIT has designed an introductory course for newly hired personnel who have limited hands-on process plan experience.  This course covers the basics of a systematic problem solving methodology using practical applications of non-process examples.  Standardized troubleshooting terminology is also established, thus paving the way for successful and productive communication with co-workers.

Instructor-led Advanced Troubleshooting
This course is designed for experienced plant personnel including outisde operators, console operators, supervisors, engineers, and electrical and instrument technicians.  Standardized terminology is still a key component of the methodology taught in this course and facilitiates clear communication.

This course is customed for both chemical and refinery processes and also includes:

  • Creating dependency diagrams to determine the dependency of one process element on another.
  • Using the dependency diagrams to isolate problems and separate causes and symptoms.
  • Applying the methodology to work through a complex process problem in real time using hands-on Simtronics process simulation exercises.
