Distance Learning FAQ

General Questions

Do I have to go to class?

Most distance classes do not require regular classroom attendance, but may require visits to campus for an orientation, testing, or other activities.
So if I don't have to go to class, what do I do?
Each class will have different requirements, but most classes require readings, tests, and other work as found in other college level classes. Given that distance classes usually require independent study, they may require more time spent in study.
Why do I have to take tests on campus (or at a testing center)?
To ensure the validity and reliability of the completed course work, there are few substitutes for proctored testing. Some instructors rely essays or other work to determine the quality of performance.

Web/Internet Related Questions

Do I have to have a computer?

No, but it will make life much easier. You may access the course material from computers on campus or at work, but you must allow for several hours a week spent on the computer.
I just got a computer, am I ready for a web based course?
Probably not. It is difficult to learn both how the computer works and how to manipulate your way around a web based environment at the same time. Also many courses will require specific software which may be downloaded from the internet for free, but does take some time to set up correctly.
How do I connect to the internet?
You must have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) which should also provide you with an email account. Check your Yellow Pages for local ISP's. AOL (America On-Line) is a national provider that provides some period of free time for connect to their service.
I use AOL, why do I have difficulty view some of the pages? ... accessing WebCT? ... running some programs?
AOL provides a browser that works well with their website, but not always so well with others. Once connected to AOL, open Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to view other website or run plug-ins (other software which runs with items on a web page)?
I sent an email to my teacher, why hasn't he/she responded?
Though many of us rely on email, it still gets lost or delayed. Hotmail is notorious for slow delivery of email. Teachers schedules also make some days more difficult to reply than others. Note: the phone is often the most underused tool of distance learning.
