 Biography

Harvey Yarborough
Professor of Mathematics

I grew up in Greensburg, Louisiana, a rural town in one of the Florida parish’s of Louisiana.  I went to college at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.  I earned a B.S. and M.S., both in mathematics, from that institution.  Upon completion of my master’s degree, I accepted a teaching position at Brazosport College with the intention of staying at least a year.  That was around 4 decades ago.  I’m still here.  I find the challenges of teaching and the excitement of getting to know students to be very gratifying.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, after visiting with Dr. Charlie Pine from Rutgers university, I devoted myself to teaching algebra using a Socratic approach.  This adjustment of my teaching style and the consequent reactions of my students have lead to the most rewarding portion, so far, of my teaching experience.

I’m married to the former Florence Simpson from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  We have two daughters Donna and Gail.

My principle hobby is singing barbershop harmony.  I’m a member of the Bay City chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and have sung with several quartets.  I also enjoy fishing , camping and traveling with my family.
