Ø Complete the FAFSA. This can be completed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
o If you were required to file a Federal income tax return (1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) for the previous year, this information will be needed to fill in Step Two of the FAFSA.
o Step Six on the FAFSA requires a listing of all colleges and their Federal School Codes. The code for Brazosport College is 007287.
o Parent information is required if student answers “no” to every question in Step Three of the FAFSA. This Federal rule applies even if the student is living alone and is self-supported. If parents are divorced, use the income tax information of the parent you currently live with or lived with last. Include the step-parent’s information if applicable. Grandparents or legal guardians are unacceptable.
o After submitting your FAFSA to the Department of Education, the Financial Aid office will continue processing your file. This process takes a minimum of four to six weeks.
Ø Financial Aid forms. These are available in the Financial Aid office for faster processing or you may wait and receive them in the mail.
o Brazosport College Application for Financial Aid - when the form states to list a major do not mark ‘undecided’; list an area of interest. Students of all ages must fill in parent information on this form.
o Satisfactory Academic Progress Form – read this form carefully and keep the yellow copy as it states our rules and regulations for financial aid.
Ø After you submit your FAFSA, the Department of Education may require verification of your application. If this occurs:
o Complete a verification form provided to you by the Financial Aid office.
o Provide a signed copy of all Federal Income Tax forms. A copy of your tax return may be obtained by calling 1-800-829-1040.
o W-2’s may also be necessary if the parents or married students have recently separated.
Ø Other necessary documents:
o High School transcript with a graduation date or a GED certificate.
o All previously attended colleges or trade school transcripts. An official sealed transcript is not necessary for financial aid purposes. For your convenience, a faxed copy is acceptable. Please write ATTN: FIN-AID on the cover page of all faxed copies.
o Dual-credit applications are available for dual-credit students to complete annually until they graduate.
Ø IMPORTANT DEADLINES: To assure financial aid is in place prior to the payment due date, a complete financial aid file must be in the Financial Aid office by the following dates. If file is not complete by the deadline, the student must make arrangements to pay their bill.
o Fall semester – July 1
o Spring semester – November 1
Ø REVIEW STUDENTS: After attempting 62 credit hours students are placed on Financial Aid Review. This requires the student to submit to the Financial Aid Office a degree audit obtained and signed by a counselor showing classes required to complete the degree. Each semester after registering for classes, review students must provide a schedule of coursework to the financial aid office before financial aid will be released. Remember to always check your bill for a balance owed prior to the deadline to pay.
We are here to serve and assist you with your educational goals. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that all required documents have been received in the financial aid office. Be mindful of our priority deadlines and know that we handle each file with the same careful attention in the order they are received. Once you are awarded or denied we will notify you with a letter. Financial aid updates are available on OASIS through the Brazosport College website. Students should check OASIS for information regarding their financial aid award status. A Brazosport College PIN number must be obtained in person from the Registrar’s office to access OASIS.
