ARTS 1301 Art Appreciation. CIP 5007035126

An introduction to the visual arts. Explores the purposes and the processes of art through critical examination of historical and contemporary works. Students will gain an understanding of the formal properties of art, techniques of art making, and social, psychological and expressive uses of art. (3 SCH, 3 lecture, 0 lab)

ARTS 1303 Art History Survey I. CIP 5007035226

A chronological examination of painting, sculpture, architecture, and related visual arts from prehistoric times to the end of the middle ages. Students will gain an understanding of the impact on art from individuals, historical events, religious and philosophical concepts during various periods. (3 SCH, 3 lecture, 0 lab)

ARTS 1316 Drawing I. CIP 5007055226

A beginning course investigating a variety of media, techniques, and subjects, including the fundamentals of line, shape, texture, space, and composition. Explores the theory and practice of expressive possibilities in drawing. (3 SCH, l lecture, 5 lab)

Prerequisite: None.

ARTS 1317 Drawing II. CIP 5007055226

Expansion of Drawing I, stressing the expressive and conceptual aspects of drawing in a variety of media and subject matter, including the human figure within a spatial environment. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Prerequisite: ARTS 1316 or approval of the division chair.

A further investigation into the problems of two-dimensional and three-dimensional form, with individual expression encouraged. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Basic instruction in the use of painting media with emphasis on color and composition. Students will complete a range of projects that explore painting techniques, formal elements of design, and individual expression. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Expansion of Drawing II, with continued instruction on structure and action of the human figure. Includes the use of mixed media, color theory, and design principles. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Exploration of ideas using sculpture media and techniques. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Exploration of creative design and color through traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques including wood block, silkscreen and monoprints. (3 SCH, 2 lecture, 4 lab)

ARTS 2334 Printmaking II. CIP 5007105126

Expansion of Printmaking I with continued instruction in creative design and color through traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques including wood blocks, silkscreen and monoprints. (3 SCH, 2 lecture, 4 lab)

A study of current concerns and practices in the visual arts. (3 SCH, 3 lecture, 0 lab)

ARTS 2346 Ceramics I. CIP 5007115126

An introduction to basic ceramic processes. Students complete a range of projects that explore the creative and technical aspects of working with clay. Pinch, coil, slab, and wheel thrown methods will be introduced. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Prerequisite: Approval of the division chair.

ARTS 2347 Ceramics II. CIP 5007115126

Opportunities for specialization in ceramic processes. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)

Prerequisite: ARTS 2346 or approval of the division chair.

ARTS 2356 Photography I. CIP 5006055226

An introduction to the basics of black and white photography. Includes knowledge of camera equipment and operation techniques, and presentation skills. Students discuss composition, content and presentation through critiques and learn how to process film and print their own photographs. The course includes an introduction to the history of photography and contemporary trends as a means of developing an understanding of photographic aesthetics. (3 SCH, 2 lecture, 4 lab)

Extends the students’ knowledge of black and white techniques and guides them in developing personal outlooks toward specific applications of the photographic process. (3 SCH, 2 lecture, 4 lab)

A studio course exploring techniques in water-based media with instruction in color and composition. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 5 lab)
