COMPASS INFORMATION

COMPASS is a computer-adaptive exam which we will use to evaluate your Reading, Mathematics, and Writing skills (including an essay). The results will be used to help plan your best course of study and ensure your success at Brazosport College.

The COMPASS exam is not timed and results are normally available after completion of test.

Students may retest at least 5 business days after the first test.  Subsequent retests will only be allowed after one month from the prior retest date.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Students are required to have a Brazosport College Identification number in order to register for the Compass exam. Students that do not have a Brazosport College Identification number can obtain one by submitting an application for admission through www.applytexas.org

Please allow at least 48 hours after completing the Brazosport College application prior to registering for the Compass exam.

The cost of the COMPASS exam is $29 and STUDENTS MUST REGISTER IN PERSON at the Counseling and Testing Receptionist.

STUDY INFORMATION

Spending time preparing for the Compass test could save you time and money by placing you in a higher level course.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS

Special accommodations for the COMPASS exam are available and should be requested as early as possible for consideration.  For additional information on special accommodations contact the Counseling and Testing office

CALCULATOR INFORMATION

 Only on-screen windows calculators (Standard or Scientific option) are allowed during Math section.

TSI EXEMPTIONS

Exemption is requested based on the following:

ACT*

Requires an official score report that is no more that five years old.  Student must have a composite score of 23 with individual Mathematical and English scores of no less than 19.

SAT*

Requires scores of 1070 combined with the minimum of 500 on the Mathematical and Critical Reading tests.  Requires an official score report that is no more than five years old.

MILITARY (Active)

Students who are serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States and have been serving for at least three years proceeding enrollment.  Copies of military I.D. and service orders must be submitted with this form.

MILITARY (Honorable discharged, retired or released)

Students who (on or after August 1, 1990) were honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States and have been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment.  Copies of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from active duty must be submitted with this form.

COLLEGE DEGREE

Students that have graduated with an Associates or a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

COLLEGE READINESS

Students have previously attended an accredited public institution of higher education and have been determined by that institution to have met Texas Success Initiative (TSI) college-level readiness standards.  Official transcripts required.

TAKS

For a period of three years from the test date, a student who performs on the eleventh grade exit-level Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) with a minimum score of 2200 on the Math section and the English Language Arts section (with a Writing subsection of at least 3.)

*Partial exemptions for Math or English are available. Please contact a counselor for more information.

QUICK CHECKLIST:
WHAT TO TAKE TO THE TEST CENTER

- Two forms of identification, one with a photograph and your name.*

- *If you do not have a photographic identification, you may not be admitted into the testing center. 

- Acceptable forms of photographic identification include but are not limited to the following:

- Drivers license, passport, library card, student identification card, military identification card, current alien    registration card.

- All forms of identification must be originals.  Photocopies will not be accepted.

If you do not have any of the listed forms of identification, please contact the Counseling and Testing office at 230-3040 prior to your test date.
