Lake Jackson, Texas – Brazosport College staff members Angela Williams and Dr. Joy Kennedy-O’Neill were recently honored by the college’s students, faculty and staff members as recipients of National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence awards.

Williams, an admissions and registrations specialist, was selected for NISOD’s staff excellence award, while Kennedy-O’Neill, an assistant professor of English, was the recipient of the organization’s teacher excellence award.

Kennedy-O’Neill, who earned an M.A. from Texas State University and a P.H.D from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has been teaching at Brazosport College for 10 years. She’s taught a variety of courses, including composition, creative writing and nature writing. Her newest class, zombie literature, proved to be a huge hit with students this past fall.

“Earning this recognition for doing something I love is a real honor,” Kennedy-O’Neill said of the NISOD award. “Teaching is easy when you’re supported by a great institution, such as Brazosport College.”

For Williams, the NISOD recognition shows that employees and students have noticed her loyalty and dedication to BC and the hard work she’s put in.

“I’m very excited about this, especially since I didn’t know I had been nominated,” Williams said with a laugh “The fact that it’s voted on by students and employees of the college makes it even more special. It’s really an honor.

Williams began working at Brazosport College 13 years ago. She’s served a variety of positions through the years, including counseling receptionist, registration specialist and her current position in admissions and registration. She earned an Associate of Applied Science in Legal Administration degree from Brazosport College in 1995.

Since 1978, NISOD has been dedicated to the professional development of faculty, administrators and staff, as well as the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal being student success. More than 700 community colleges around the world are members of NISOD, including a majority of urban and technical colleges in the United States and Canada.

The goals of NISOD’s International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence are to celebrate excellence and to provide a unique professional development opportunity for community college and university faculty, staff and administrators to foster student success.
