Brazosport College introducing 9 new ALLP classes for spring
Every semester, Brazosport College’s Adult Life and Learning Program organizers seek out new classes they believe will pique the interest of community residents. The 2011 spring semester is no exception to this rule, as ALLP is introducing nine new classes to its wide-ranging selection of courses.
Each one of ALLP’s 27 total classes are geared toward stimulating the mind and body of adults ages 50 and up. At the same time, the courses are designed to be an enjoyable, fun experience for all participants.
The new classes range from eating wisely to safety tips to learning the Bible in simple terms, just to name a few. All of the instructors have volunteered their time and are experts in their fields.
A full listing of the nine new fall semester ALLP classes are:
All Knotted Up! Off-Loom Weaving 101: Instructor Shey Cotton will assist you in exploring the basics of Native American weaving in a circle. Anami weaving is weaving from the center out and represents the life cycle of the People.
Bridge Playing (Advanced): Now that you have mastered the basics, it’s time to work on skills such as bidding communication and advanced play strategies. Participants should have a good understanding of how to count the hand, basic bidding and basic play.
Charlie’s European Travelogue – Turning a Trip Into a Pilgrimage: Traveling from the Oberammergau Passion Play through Italy, Greece and back to Munich, learn how this trip started as a journey and became a pilgrimage.
Eat Smart: The Eat Smart program focuses on heart/bone health, food safety and how eating can lower your risk for developing cancer and diabetes. Instructor Sharon Trower also is great at sharing her favorite recipes and tips.
I’m Thinking of RVing – Now What?: This course, instructed by Charlie Stanger, will give the wanna-be RVer or beginning RVer a view into the lifestyle, why it is so popular, what is available and how to get where you are going.
Making Fashion Jewelry with Ribbon: Make unique and beautiful jewelry from specialty ribbons. Projects include making a six-strand necklace using Trellis ribbon, matching earrings and a 32-strand necklace copied from the Smithsonian Christmas. The items are all lightweight and elegant. Crocheting skills are helpful, but not required. This class has a $12 materials fee.
Senior Safety: Beverly Bernzen is back with more helpful and important information for everyone. Topics will include how to de-clutter our homes for safety purposes, a fall-prevention workshop, a discussion on dealing with depression and loss and a visit from the local police department with information on protecting oneself from scams and identity theft.
The Bible in Living Simplicity: Buddy Scott will help you understand the Bible so well you will be able to explain it to your grandchildren. The Old and New Testaments spring to life with clarity. Scott has traveled extensively and taught this course many times throughout his ministry.
Weight Loss Support Group: As of 2008, one-third of American adults are obese. Experts agree that success maintaining weight loss requires steady support. This group will be there to motivate you and keep you on the path toward fulfilling your goals. It will provide ideas, tips, tricks, recipes and more.
Overall, ALLP’s spring program offers 27 classes covering a wide variety of subjects. Catalogs are available in local libraries and at the college.
