Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers present spring jazz concert May 6
The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers and special guest Kelly Dean will present a jazz concert on Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. at The Clarion at Brazosport College. The concert is free and the public is cordially invited.
Kelly Dean is an outstanding performer on sax, flute, piano and vocals, and one of Houston's most sought-after musicians. Dean leads a couple of his own groups - the Kelly Dean Group, which specializes in wedding receptions and shopping center openings; Grenade, a high-energy jazz fusion group; and the Houston Funk Factory, which as its name implies, cranks out “old school” funk along the lines of James Brown.
In addition, Dean can be seen around Houston performing with the Houston Symphony Pops or playing piano and singing at Truluck’s Restaurant. Over the course of his career, he has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, Steve Tyrell, John Denver and Frankie Valli, to name just a few. Dean also is the author of "Jazz Essentials-Nuts & Bolts Instruction For The Jazz & Pop Musician."
Selections to be performed by the BC Jazz Band include Sanctified Blues by Wynton Marsalis, Cheesecake by Dexter Gordon and Trofeo de Bolos by Craig Skeffington.
Selections from the Jazz Singers will include Michael Buble’s It Had Better Be Tonight and the jazz standard Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans? Additionally, Emily Terrell and Lori Shoemaker will be featured as vocal soloists with the BC Jazz Band on Wind Beneath My Wings and Hold On respectively.
