Brazosport College has the science of having fun down pat and will put that knowledge to work this summer in a week-long program for 12- to 18-year olds. “Science at Work,” held on campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 11 through 15, is designed to present science in a practical, fun format that will encourage teens at all levels who are interested in the sciences.
Each day of the course, participants will focus on a different branch of science, including environmental and life science, chemistry and physics, astronomy and geology, as well as biology and health science. Hands-on activities, field trips, tours and access to simulators that give students the feel of operating the equipment used in the workplace highlight real-world applications for the curriculum.
“With ‘Science at Work,’ teens are able to explore in greater depth the various aspects of science. Because the size of this group is so much smaller than a typical high school or junior high classroom, we’re able to do some fun projects and work with people in the various fields that they might not otherwise be able to do,” said Shelley McCoy, Brazosport College Energy Venture Camp Coordinator. “This is an excellent opportunity for young people who think they may like to pursue a career in a science field some day to learn a little bit more about it.”
A Summer Merit camp, “Science at Work” provides an opportunity for teens to explore career options within a variety of fields and exposes them to other options for their future that may be available with a scientific background.
Registration for “Science at Work” is currently open and participants are encouraged to register early to guarantee placement. The cost of the camp is $249 and scholarships may be available to assist with the cost. Students may register through the Brazosport College website at www.brazosport.edu/ce or in person at the Community Education Center, located at 120 Circle Way in Lake Jackson, and the main campus registrar.
