Brazosport College’s ALLP program has classes for all tastes

Brazosport College’s Adult Life and Learning Program has announced its schedule of classes for the fall 2011 semester and it features something for everyone.

ALLP, which is for adults age 50 and up, will begin its new schedule of classes on October 11. The classes run weekly for six weeks and end November 17. Registration is ongoing.

ALLP is geared toward helping seniors grow in a variety of ways by developing new skills and improving one’s lifestyle without the pressure normally associated with a college. The classes will inspire, while giving the opportunity to learn in an environment designed for enjoyment.

“Some classes will inspire and challenge you, while others are just plain fun and relaxing,” ALLP co-coordinator Sally Fink said. “Whether you have a list of college degrees or never had the opportunity to attend college, ALLP provides learning opportunities for everyone.”

A total of 23 different classes are offered during the fall semester, ranging from quilting to local history to computer skills, and everything in-between.

All classes offered under the ALLP program have a one-semester fee of $45, or one can enroll with a friend and each will receive a $5 discount. Participants can choose up to eight classes for a single fee. ALLP is also offering nine new classes this semester. A few of the new topics include paper collage, drawing, beginning Spanish and learning about Gulf Coast seashells, among other new options.
The classes are held at the Brazosport College main campus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A minimum of six participants is required for most classes to run and others have limited space.

The class registration fee also enables participants other benefits, including use of the Brazosport College library and computers in the Learning Assistance Center; free admission to all drama programs at the college; a 15 percent discount on lunch in the BC Commons during ALLP and admission to the BC art gallery.

A few of the popular classes include:

Baubles, Bangles and Beads: Instructor Bernice Spell will teach you the art of beading with glass beads. You’ll have the opportunity to make custom bracelets to complete that special holiday outfit. Want more holiday treats? You’ll also learn how to make beaded napkins, wine glass rings, forks and spoons and carafes.

Computer Fun & Browsing the Web: Learn safe web browsing techniques and where to find sites for fun and games on the Internet. There is always something new to learn about computers and the Web.

Digital Photography: Develop a creative eye for capturing pleasing photos. The course will be focused on attendees’ specific questions and topics of interest.

Weight Loss Support Group: Experts agree that in order to maintain a successful weight loss program it takes a steady support system. This group will be there to motivate you and keep you on the path to fulfilling your goals. We will provide tips, tricks, recipes and resources to not only get the pounds off, but to also keep them off.

Introduction to Clay Sculpting: Learn a new hobby, be creative and work away the stresses of the day! Instructor Joe Morris will teach you the basics of sculpting with clay and teach you how to make your own figurine and vase.
