
Klassical Kids to take Clarion stage Friday night
The Brazosport College Department of Music will present its fifth-annual Klassical Kids concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14 in the performance hall at the Clarion at Brazosport College.
Area music students from sixth grade to high school seniors auditioned for a chance to be a part of this year’s concert back in March. The concert is loosely based on the NPR radio program “From the Top.”
Students selected include:
Chase Cooper, horn - playing “Wiegeleid Op.49 No. 4 (Lullaby)” by Johannes Brahms and “My Heart Will Go On” by James Horner. Chase is a sixth-grader at Clute Intermediate School where, in addition to being in band, his favorite subjects are physical education and science. Chase is in Boy Scouts and is a bugler for Troop 324. His hobbies are camping, hiking, backpacking and video games.
Sawan Dalal, piano - playing “Waterfall” by Jon Schmidt. Sawan is a freshman at the Debakey High School for Health Professions in Houston. His school activities include Health Occupations Students of America, Medical Explorers, American Red Cross, Biology Club, Medical Journal Club and Tennis Club. He also is a percussionist.
Brittany Faith, mezzo-soprano - singing “Angels Ever Bright and Fair,” a recitative and aria from Handel’s opera Theodora. Brittany is a senior at Columbia High School in West Columbia. She enjoys reading, knitting, drawing, soccer and volleyball, though her passion is music and becoming a music teacher. School activities include National Honor Society and Book Club.
Jillian Athey, piano - playing “Sonata in C minor, Op.13 (Pathetique), mvt. III Allegro” by Ludwig van Beethoven. Jillian is a senior at Brazoswood High School, where she plays oboe in the Brazoswood Symphonic Band, and participates in art, The Texas Future Music Educator, National Honor Society and Interact Club.
Andrea Salazar, flute - playing “Carnival of Venice, Op. 78” by Giulio Briccialdi. Andrea is a senior flutist in the Brazoswood High School Band, where she is involved with lots of sectionals. She enjoys playing in the full orchestra, the Brazosport Center Stages pit orchestras and occasional gigs with the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra. Her interests include writing poetry, photography, drawing, playing saxophone and giving flute lessons to younger students.
Caleb Parker, piano - playing “Polonaise in C# minor, Op.26 No.2” by F. Chopin. Caleb, in addition to playing the piano, plays violin with the Brazoswood High School Chamber Orchestra, also serving as historian, and electric violin with St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church praise and worship band. He is National Honor Society and Muggle Quidditch League member. His passion is creative writing.
Matthew Siebert will serve as emcee and Rodney Mason will host this year, with special guest artist, pianist Alpin Hong.
