BC employees honored for excellence in education
Brazosport College staff members Donald Payne and Kathy Cannon were recently honored by the college’s students, faculty and staff members as recipients of National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence awards.
Cannon, a physical sciences and process technologies senior administrative office specialist, was selected for NISOD’s staff excellence award, while Payne, an assistant professor of accounting, was the recipient of the organization’s teacher excellence award.
Payne, who earned his B.B.A. and M.S. from Texas A&M University, currently teaches accounting and economics at Brazosport College. In addition to teaching, he has also created and is head of the Brazosport College Economic Forecasting Center. Payne and his wife are expecting their third child in June.
“I am grateful to receive the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award,” Payne said. “I am very excited that my colleagues and students feel that I am deserving of such a prestigious award.”
For Cannon, the NISOD accolade is a testament of her dedication for helping BC students.
“I am deeply honored to be a NISOD award recipient,” Cannon said. “My goal is the help Brazosport College students be successful in their college career so they may do well in their chosen career path. It is gratifying to see the smiles on their faces and hear a heartfelt ‘thank you’ when I’m able to provide the help they need.”
Cannon began working at Brazosport College in 1998 in the math and science division. She moved to the physical sciences and process technologies division after it was formed a few years later. Her main goal is to assist students, but she also works with the area’s industry partners. Cannon, who received her B.B.A. from Sam Houston State University, is married and has two children.
Since 1978, NISOD has been dedicated to the professional development of faculty, administrators and staff, as well as the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal being student success. More than 700 community colleges around the world are members of NISON, including a majority of urban and technical colleges in the United States and Canada.
The goals of NISOD’s International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence are to celebrate excellence and to provide a unique professional development opportunity for community college and university faculty, staff and administrators to foster student success.
