Teens Zone In at Brazosport College

 Billy Loveless, 6/16/2011

While summertime may be an opportunity to take a break from the rigors of school, Brazosport College is enticing teenagers back into the classroom with a selection of challenging and engaging courses for students ages 12- through 17-years old.

The iZone teen classes, which offer young people the opportunity to sharpen their skills or try out new interests, are scheduled for various times through the end of July on campus.

“Being a teenager is all about discovering who you are and what you want to do. Our iZone classes are designed to give young people the chance to explore different areas and interests that they might not do otherwise in their regular coursework at school,” said Gemi Powell, Brazosport College Youth Program Coordinator.

Students can learn about photography, creative writing and Japan or tackle the challenges of fencing, volleyball and tennis. Introduction to AutoCad will provide a beginning look at computer aided drafting. A series of cooking classes serves up a menu of selections from sushi to cupcakes.

Other courses offer more practical experience. The SAT/ACT Test Prep will help college-bound students get ready for taking entrance exams. Learning childcare skills may open the doors for earning money as a babysitter. Etiquette classes for young men and young women teach excellent skills for maneuvering professional and social situations with confidence.

“Grinding through the school year can make it hard to remember that learning can actually be fun. iZone lets teenagers expand their interests without the pressure of grades and GPA’s,” said Powell. “I believe that it’s important to foster that love of learning now and it will last a lifetime.”

A complete list of courses is available on the Brazosport College Community Education Web site at www.brazosport.edu/ce. Most classes have a limited availability for participation, and registration is currently open online and at the Community Education Center at 210 Circle Way in Lake Jackson. Additional information and a catalogue are available by calling the college at 979-230-3600.
