Forget taking 186 students from three high schools and Brazosport College to dinner and Houston Grand Opera! Sandra Petrovich really surpassed the mark when she took 30 students, their families, and friends on a tour of Italy and Greece. Dual credit students from Columbia High School joined their fellow BC students, family members, and friends from as far away are Minnesota and Illinois. Traveling on three different flights, the group reassembled in Rome. The tour included the Vatican, seeing the Pope, the Coliseum, the Forum, and more. The group then went to Pompeii and crossed the Adriatic Sea on a night ferry from Brendasi, Italy to Patras, Greece. In Greece, students and family alike enjoyed ancient Mycenea and the Tomb of Agamemnon, ancient Olympia where the Olympics were first held, Epiduras with its ancient theatre, ancient Delphi, Athens, and then a four day cruise of the Greek Islands and Turkey. Places they visited were Mykonos, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes (and Lindos), Santorini, and Kusadasi (including ancient Ephesus). It took a lot of coordination to bring it off, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Brazosport College students managed to get first hand experiences of other cultures from dickering in a bazaar in Turkey to eating foreign delicacies such as stuffed grape leaves (Dolmas) in Greece. They even learned to do traditional Greek dancing at Greek night in Athens, as well as seeing first hand where the ancients walked. Joining the tour were Dr. Alisa Petrovich and professor Beatriz Darst from Brazosport College. As one student remarked at the Athenian Acropolis, “I can’t believe I’m seeing what you told us about!.”
