Dr. Millicent Valek became Brazosport College’s fourth President on September 1, 1996. Through her leadership, the college has garnered the support of the community and college employees for a multimillion dollar building expansion and the authority to offer its first baccalaureate degree.  As part of the educational plan, the college's foundation plays an increasingly significant role in supporting initiatives that help our adult and youth populations to have access to college programs.

Work History
Millicent began her career as a Speech teacher for the Austin Independent School District in 1972. She began working at Austin Community College in 1979, first as an adjunct instructor and then as a mid-level manager.  In 1988, she joined the staff of Arizona Western College in Yuma Arizona as the chief academic officer. Millicent served as Vice President for this multi-site community college district for eight years prior to being named president of Brazosport College.

Civic and Professional Participation
Valuing involvement in the community, Millicent serves on a number of civic boards and in leadership roles for several professional organizations.  She is currently the Chairman of the Texas Association of Community Colleges -- representing the 50 community college districts in Texas.   

Personal Biography
Born in Brownsville, Texas, Millicent attended the University of Texas at Austin graduating with a B.S. in Secondary Education and subsequently attended Southwest Texas State University where she received her M.Ed. in Educational Administration.  In 1988, she earned her Ph.D. in Educational Administration through the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas.  In 1997, Dr. Valek was named a Distinguished Graduate of the College of Education at the University of Texas.

Millicent is married to John May.  Dr. Valek has one son--Mike who received his B.S. from the University of Arizona in Tucson and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas.  He and his wife Angela are currently residing in Austin, Texas.
