College and Community Band set for President’s Day concert

Tue Feb 10, 2015

The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a President’s Day concert featuring the College and Community Band at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 16.

The band will be under the direction of Richard Birk and the concert will held at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

“Our program will include American marches, historical tributes and a powerful musical portrait of the battle of Gettysburg,” Birk said. “I hope the community will come join us as we celebrate President’s Day.”

Selections scheduled to be performed on February 16 include:

“American Salute” — a set of variations on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” composed by Morton Gould in 1943

“Within These Hallowed Halls” — a patriotic setting of two popular hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” by James Swearingen, with narration by band member Bill Primrose

“Gettysburg: The Third Day” — a tone poem by Jay Dawson that depicts the epic battle between Union and Confederate troops on July 3, 1863

“An American Spectacular” — is a musical journey by arranger Christ Sharp through American history and includes “God Save the Queen,” “The Girl I Left Behind,” “Columbia, Gem of the Ocean,” The Battle Cry of Freedom” and “America, the Beautiful”

“America Exultant” — a patriotic march published in 1917 by Henry Fillmore that prominently features “America” in the trio section
