Brazosport College’s Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off Sept. 15

Brazosport College is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events beginning Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

The month’s festivities will include cooking demonstrations, dance and embroidery classes, and panel discussions on engaging and serious topics. Also featured will be a “Happy Hour” comedy performance with stand-up comedian Jacob James Garcia, flag displays and a LULAC-sponsored fun run.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH KICKOFF EVENT

Hispanic Heritage Month begins with music, games, food and fun. Learn about the upcoming events and join the fun in our inaugural Hispanic runway/contest. Show off your favorite Hispanic attire for a chance to win prizes. For contest rules, click here.

MEN’S DISCUSSION: “EL CHISME” FOR MEN – PAN Y CAFECITO DISCUSSION
Monday, Sept. 19; 1:30–2:30 p.m.
Bonnen Central Main Entrance

Join us for a conversation about men among men. What are some of the issues affecting men in the Hispanic community? How does culture and ethnicity affect the way you act or think? Does anything need to change? This event is only for BC students, faculty and staff.

DANCE CLASS: SALSA DANCE WITH CHRIS WILLIAMS
Wednesday, Sept. 21; 12–1 p.m.
MEGlobal Student Pavilion

Local ballroom dance instructor Chris Williams will teach us one of the most popular Latin dances: the salsa. No partner is required and all skill levels are welcome.

DIY EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP with MILAGROS TEXTILES
Thursday, Sept. 22; 2-4 p.m.
Gator Hall (H.100)

Coming from Oaxaca, Mexico, Xitlalic of Milagros Textiles will teach us about the history of embroidery, its meaning and different techniques, before leading a demonstration. Supplies will be provided for students and employees. Pre-registration is required. Materials can be picked up in the Student Life office on Tuesday, Sept. 20 if attending via Zoom. COOKING DEMO & SALSA COMPETITION
Wednesday, Sept. 28; 1-2 p.m. & 5-6 p.m.
Community Education Kitchen (B.115)

SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOP with LULAC & LATINA WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP

With costs soaring, why not learn how to find and apply to Hispanic-focused scholarships and save money on college costs? Come learn from representatives of LULAC and Latina Women in Leadership about how to find scholarships that are available to you and how to write a winning essay.

ART GALLERY RECEPTION: “WORDS FOR CROSSING” BY RAMIRO RODRIGUEZ

Come explore "Words for Crossing," a collection of artwork by Hispanic artist Ramiro Rodriguez. These pieces will display the artist's connection to Mexican culture and experience as the son of immigrants. Light snacks will be provided.

MARIACHI 5K FUN RUN
Saturday, Oct. 8; 8 a.m.
Outside MEGlobal Student Pavilion

Run our certified, chip-timed 5K course with food and mariachis waiting at the finish line. Bundle with the BC Gator Gallop to save even more on your registration! This event is hosted in conjunction with LULAC to raise scholarships for students. Registration details available here.

PANEL DISCUSSION: “CÓMO NOS UNIMOS? FOSTERING INCLUSIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM AND WORKPLACE”

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CLOSING EVENT: DRIVE-IN MOVIE NIGHT, “ENCANTO”
Thursday, Oct. 13; 6:30 p.m.
BC Orange Parking Lot
Enjoy a drive-in screening of the family-friendly film, “Encanto.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie begins at sundown. Food trucks will be on-site and food tickets will be provided to BC students.
