BC Theater to hold auditions for ‘Shakespeare’s R&J' on May 15-16

Brazosport College Theatre is seeking actors for its upcoming production of “Shakespeare’s R&J.”

Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16 at The Seidule Theatre at Brazosport College.

“Shakespeare’s R&J” features four young students attending a prep school, in which the classic play, “Romeo and Juliet,” has been banned. The students steal away at night to read the forbidden story of adolescent passion and find themselves immersed in the tale that begins to blur with their own lives.

As truths emerge, the relationship between the students and the play changes forever. The rigidity of their lives begins to parallel the lives of the characters in the play: roles in the family, roles in society, and the roles played by men and women soon seem to make all the sense in the world, and then, suddenly, they seem to make no sense at all.

Auditions are open to students and non-students, and Brazosport College Theatre productions are worth college credit. Participation in a BC Theatre production automatically makes one eligible to receive three hours of credit and a potential scholarship.

For this play, BC Theatre is seeking four to eight actors who can play male and are physically comfortable with hand-to-hand stage combat. Those auditioning should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to move.

Rehearsals will be on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from May 29 through July 13. Start time will be negotiable once cast. Tech week will have extra rehearsals.

All actors will be called to every rehearsal.

Performances are scheduled for on July 14-23.
