Brazosport College shows off nursing program during open house event

Nearly 100 people recently visited Brazosport College to attend an open house hosted by the college’s department of nursing.

The showcase allowed the community to get a closer look at the BC healthcare program and facilities, as well as meet instructors through tours of the college’s state-of-art labs. Those in attendance also had one-on-one opportunities to ask questions about the programs.

“I wanted to share with our community the amazing resources that are already in their backyard,” said Brazosport College Associate Degree and Vocational Nursing Program Director Samantha Resecker. “It’s important for people to know that Brazosport College can provide you with a nursing student experience that will set you up for success.

“I heard a lot of ‘I had no idea that these facilities (the simulation labs) were here,’” she added of the reaction to the open house. “The tours seemed to instill excitement about the nursing programs and the wide variety of experiences our nursing students are afforded.”

This was far from the only purpose of the showcase, though.

“In addition, I wanted our current students to be able to share with their family and friends where they’ve been studying and practicing,” Resecker said. “Lastly, I wanted our current and potential industry partners to see our facilities, in hopes of encouraging partnerships and collaboration.” 

Brazosport College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree for students working toward becoming a Registered Nurse (RN), as well as a one-year option for those seeking to earn a Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) certificate. In addition, another option is the LVN to RN Track, which is for LVNs looking to become RNs. The college’s healthcare program also has training for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) professionals.

Through its Community Education department, BC also offers a variety of Allied Health program training, including Phlebotomy Technician and Medical Assistant, among others.

“Our program here at Brazosport College offers an excellent education and experience at a much lower cost than universities,” Resecker said. “We have diverse clinical experiences and proven outcomes. In fact, our most recent ADN class proudly achieved a 100-percent first-time pass rate on the NCLEX-RN. Since 2020, our LVN graduates have consistently maintained a 100-percent first-time pass rate on the NCLEX-PN. To put this in perspective, the 2022 NCLEX-RN pass rate for Texas stands at 84.28 percent, while the national average in 79.91.

“We are so grateful to our clinical affiliates,” she added. “Their invaluable support greatly contributes to the academic success of our students,” she added. “Our nursing program is well-funded and supported by the college and community industry partners.”

With more than 57,000 full-time open nursing positions and an average RN pay of $40 an hour (according to the Texas Department of State Health Services), it wasn’t a surprise that the recent open house had a strong turnout of people interested in BC’s healthcare programs. In fact, Resecker is planning to have another open house in the not-too-distant future.

“Nursing is generally seen as a rewarding career and has many advantages, including flexibility in job location, hours worked and different specialties,” Resecker said. “We were extremely pleased with the turnout and even more excited to see so many people interested in our nursing program.”
