Local experts share knowledge in Brazosport College SHEM class

Eric Birch, an attorney who was formerly with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), speaks to a Brazosport College SHEM special topics class about TCEQ Enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, and the importance of staying in compliance with environmental regulations. Birch was one of six special speakers that presented to the class throughout the Spring semester.

Brazosport College Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SHEM) Instructor Sam Chamberlain provided students in his Special Topics in Occupational Safety and Health Technology/Technician (OSHT 1191) class some expert opinion and analysis by bringing in guest speakers throughout the semester.

Through the special topics course, Chamberlain welcomed six different speakers to provide a perspective on the practical side of safety and environmental based on professionals in the field. The SHEM Advisory Committee recommended this course and participated in the final exam presentation by the students to the Advisory Committee.

Among those speaking were: 

Eric Birch — An attorney, formerly with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and currently in his own firm near Conroe. Birch spoke on TCEQ Enforcement of environmental laws and regulations and the importance of staying in compliance with environmental regulations.

Eddie River — A retired Dow Executive, River has traveled worldwide for The Dow Chemical Company to help develop team effectiveness, assist employees in presentations to management and to apply these principles to their personal lives. River met with students several times during the semester to help them with the proper dress attire, body language and slide show presentations.

Leslie Cancion — As Lake Jackson Health Inspector, Cancion provided an inside look at the health inspector responsibilities and gave some unusual scenarios she has had to deal with in Lake Jackson. 

Brandy Pennington — Pennington is a member of the Brazosport College Police Department. She presented what to do should an active shooter appear on the BC campus. She delivers this presentation to all of Chamberlain’s SHEM classes.

Jorge Gomez — An OSHA Compliance Assistance Officer, Gomez gave a presentation on current OSHA statistics for this area. As a compliance assistance officer, Gomez is called in to many chemical, refineries, etc. to advise them on how to improve their safety compliance programs and efforts. 

Patrick Sifuentes — A member of the BC Library staff. Sifuentes provided excellent guidance on how students can utilize the library resources to complete their term project and how the library is always available to support students.
