A year of participation in campus activities and working toward educational goals has paid off for Brazosport College student Jesus Ramirez.

Ramirez was named the winner of Brazosport College’s 2021-22 Strive 2 Drive initiative campaign and was rewarded with a new Honda Civic during a presentation Thursday, April 14 in front of the MEGlobal Student Pavilion.

Ramirez was one of five finalists, who were randomly selected after participating in the Strive 2 Drive program throughout the academic year. Other finalists included Nicolas Jimenez, Paola Mendez, Olivia Echevarria and Nicholas Mikel.

“This is unbelievable — I can’t believe I just won a brand new car,” Ramirez said. “I don’t have to worry about my mom’s truck breaking down. That’s all I really wanted, to win this for her. This makes everything so much more stress-free for us.”

Ramirez, 19, is in his second year at Brazosport College and is seeking a welding career. He graduated from Angleton High School in 2021.

“Congratulations to Jesus Ramirez, the winner of the Strive 2 Drive initiative,” said Brazosport College President Dr. Vincent Solis. “This program reinforces behaviors that have shown to lead to success in college. I’m so grateful to our sponsors who made it possible for us to continue this initiative and to all the BC students who chose to participate.”

Also earning one of the day’s biggest prizes was BC student Andrew Martinez, who was awarded $1,000 in gift cards for finishing as the year’s highest point earner.

Now in its fourth year, Strive 2 Drive is one of the biggest promotions ever offered by Brazosport College. The Strive 2 Drive sponsors include Honda of Lake Jackson, BASF, The Dow Chemical Company, Freeport LNG, TDECU and Vernor Materials & Equipment.

The Strive 2 Drive program is based on participation in campus activities and operated on a defined point system, with points assigned based on the length, importance and educational value of the activities. Every participating student was entered into a drawing for the grand prize, a new Honda Civic.

Previous Strive 2 Drive winners include BC students Ashley Lundy, Gwyneth Sidney and Rhena Latiolais.
