BC Theater to hold auditions for ‘As You Like It’ on June 6-7

Brazosport College Theatre is seeking actors for its upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”

Auditions will be at 6 p.m. on June 6 and 7 at The Seidule Theatre on the Brazosport College campus.

Rehearsals will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from June 20 through August 9. Not every actor will be called to all rehearsals. The performances are scheduled for August 10 through 14 at the outdoor Shakespeare in the Glen venue at Brazosport College.

Directed by Kris Vanderwedge, “As You Like It” features lovers Rosalind and Orlando, who are unable to act on their feelings and forced into exile before becoming entangled in a beguiling game of love, lust and mistaken identity.

“As You Like It” subverts the traditional rules of romance and gender roles. Nature and politics are confused in a play that reflects on how bewildering, yet utterly pleasurable, life can be.

BC Theatre is seeking to cast all types of people for all roles, and is interested in gender-fluid, trans and BIPOC actors. Guitar playing and/or stage combat experience a plus. Roles may be cast separately or doubled.

To prepare for the audition, actors will be asked to present a 30-second Shakespearean monologue. Actors will not be permitted to audition without a monologue, as it’s important for the auditors to be able to see one’s abilities with the language in a memorized piece. Actors may also be given a script and asked to read a scene from the play with other actors.

Anyone can participate in BC Theatre productions and BC Theatre shows are worth college credits. By participating in a production, actors will automatically be eligible to receive three hours of credit and a scholarship. Scholarships of as much as $2,000 are available.
