BC Phi Theta Kappa chapter recognized for outstanding growth
Brazosport College’s Psi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for its efforts to increase PTK membership on campus in 2020.
The recognition is part of PTK’s REACH Rewards program, which celebrates and rewards PTK chapters excelling in membership development. More than 112,500 students across the world became PTK members in 2020, including 170 new members at Brazosport College.
“We are proud to remain a REACH chapter after a challenging year,” said Brazosport College PTK advisor Cassie Bruner. “Our students are resilient and we are excited that they decided to take advantage of this membership opportunity despite all of the obstacles they encountered this past year.”
REACH, which stands for Recognizing Excellence in Acceptance and Completion with Honors, encourages membership by rewarding chapters that achieve or exceed 15 percent for their membership acceptance rate.
“Being a REACH chapter is more important this year than ever before, as Phi Theta Kappa worked to support community college students in completely unfamiliar circumstances,” said PTK President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “Racial and political unrest, and a global pandemic made 2020 the most challenging year in recent history — one that our students, chapters and partner colleges worked exceptionally hard to overcome.
“Although this is a chapter award, it demonstrates that students are more focused on their futures than ever before, and their colleges are providing the opportunities to get them there — even amid a global pandemic,” she added.
On average, 91 percent of Phi Theta Kappa members will complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college. Members have access to $48 million in scholarships — $1 million in competitive scholarships through the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation — and more than $46 million in transfer scholarships to more than 850 four-year colleges.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the oldest and most prestigious honor society for students seeking associate degrees and credentials from community colleges and other open-access institutions, with chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territorial possessions and 10 sovereign nations.
