BC to celebrate Black History Month throughout month of February
Brazosport College will celebrate Black History Month throughout the month of February with a variety of events that celebrate Black Excellence by recognizing living legends and rising stars.
The month begins with a kickoff celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 2 outside the MEGlobal Student Pavilion and will conclude with a Soul Food cooking demonstration with Chef Deedee from the popular Houston cooking class, “Cooking with a Twist.”
Also highlighting the month’s activities are discussions on overcoming obstacles in education and the advantages of attending a Historically Black College, as well as an informative documentary about the history of Soul Food. Rounding out the month will be a luncheon, an art session and ceremony for the MLK Celebration Committee’s poster awards, among other activities.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Black History Month Kickoff: Celebrate Black Excellence
1- 3 p.m. outside the MEGlobal Student Pavilion
Kick off Black History Month and celebrate Black Excellence by recognizing Living Legends and Rising Stars. Listen to live music from DJ Larro while enjoying the cuisine from local food trucks. First 100 students receive food tickets. This event is open to the public.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10
Black Excellence in Art
1 – 3 p.m. at Gator Hall
Join local artist Gregory Roberson during this interactive etching art session and learn how art has impacted the black community.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15
Coffee & Conversation: Black Excellence and Overcoming Obstacles in Education
1 – 3 p.m. at the MEGlobal Student Pavilion
Join the conversation about obstacles and barriers that have been encountered in education and how they were overcame.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17
Black Excellence Celebration Luncheon
11:30-1:30 p.m. at Dow Academic Center, Room D
A lunch to discuss Black Excellence and to recognize Brazoria County Black Living Legends. Seating is limited and tickets are required. Tickets can be obtained from Student Life (J.117) or the Employee Development Center (A.200). This event is open to the public.

MLK Poster Award Ceremony
6:30 p.m. at Gator Hall, BC Central
Local youth display and receive recognition for their works in the 2022 “Love in Action … Change Lives” essay contest and poster awards.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22
Black Excellence in Education Discussion: Advantages of attending a Historically Black College
2 – 4 p.m. at Gator Hall and Zoom (Online)
Discuss the cultural and life-changing experience that comes with attending an HBCU and stay for BC’s Transfer Fair. Dave A. Louis will be the speaker

Documentary and Discussion
11 a.m. -1 p.m. at Gator Hall
Black food is American food. Chef and writer Stephen Satterfield traces African America food from Africa to Texas in this 2021 docuseries.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24
Cooking Demonstration: Soul Food with Chef DeeDee
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Community Education Kitchen
Attend one of three sessions as Chef DeeDee walks everyone through the steps to cook authentic soul food. Sample the amazing dishes and take-home recipe cards of each entrée, including beef tips and gravy with rice, smothered chicken, candied yams and mixed greens. Sessions are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Only one session per person.
