Brazosport College celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
LAKE JACKSON — Brazosport College is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events scheduled through Oct. 15.
The month’s festivities include cooking demonstrations, dance and crochet classes, and panel discussions on engaging and serious topics. Also featured will be a mural walk and an essay contest.
A few of BC’s employees will also share their thoughts about their heritage in stories that will be released throughout the month.
Below is a list of upcoming Brazosport College’s Hispanic Heritage Month activities:
MEN’S DISCUSSION: BEYOND THE MACHISMO
Thursday, Sept. 23; 2 – 3 p.m.
MEGlobal Student Pavilion
Join in a discussion on some of the issues affecting men in the Hispanic community. How does culture or ethnicity affect the way you act/think about yourself or others? Does anything need to change? EGC credits are available and this is a Strive2Drive event. Attend this event for a chance to win tickets to the José Feliciano concert at the Clarion on November 5. Registration is not required.
MURAL WALK & INTRO TO ESSAY CONTEST
Monday, Sept. 27; 1 p.m.

Meet in the library for a short walk to hidden murals depicting Hispanic imagery. Students can also learn about our essay contest. In 500 to 1000 words, tell us your interpretation of the murals on display on the second floor. Essays due by Oct. 15 at 5 pm. Submit essays to dei@brazosport.edu. First prize is $100 and two tickets to the José Feliciano concert at The Clarion on November 5. Second prize: $50. Registration is not required.
COOKING DEMO: ARROZ CON POLLO
Wednesday, Sept. 29; 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Daniela Ocampo will lead a demonstration of Colombian Arroz Con Pollo. BC students and employees can pick up free ingredients from the Student Life Office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sept. 28.
PANEL DISCUSSION: “CAMINOS Y CONEXIONES” OF HERITAGE, CULTURE AND CAREER

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CLOSING EVENT – DRIVE-IN MOVIE NIGHT, “IN THE HEIGHTS”

Enjoy a drive-in screening of “In the Heights.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the movie begins at sundown. Food trucks will be on-site and food tickets will be provided to BC students. Registration is not required.
