Brazosport College’s May Children’s Center earns highest state certification

The administration and staff at the Bill & Julia May Children’s Center at Brazosport College recently earned recertification as a 4-star program in the Texas Rising Star Child Care Quality Improvement Program.

This certification, which lasts for three years and began April 1, is the highest level a program can receive in the State of Texas.

“As a lab school for early care and education, these designations are extremely important,” said May Children Center Director Christine Webster. “They demonstrate that our program employs best practices at all levels — teacher-child interactions in the classroom, curriculum, administration and parent communication. We teach and demonstrate these best practices to our students in early care and education and serve as a model of high-quality childcare for Southern Brazoria County.”

In Texas, childcare and early learning programs must adhere to minimum standards defined by Texas Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Care Centers (LCCMS). These standards help ensure the health and safety of children in care outside of the home. As the childcare regulatory and licensing agency for Texas, LCCMS monitors programs for compliance with minimum standards and may issue corrective or adverse actions when programs fail to comply.

To participate in TWC’s Child Care Services program, childcare programs must achieve Pre-Star status by demonstrating a high rate of compliance with LCCMS’s minimum standards. Texas Rising Star provides the next step.

Texas Rising Star is a rating system for childcare and early learning programs that exceed LCCMS minimum standards. For an early learning program to meet and maintain Texas Rising Star certification criteria, the program must demonstrate consistent compliance with LCCMS minimum standards. Texas Rising Star is intended to measurably improve the quality of childcare and early learning programs and thereby enhance children’s development and promote school readiness.

The Texas 4-Star designation, along with the National Association for the Education of Young Children Accreditation, establishes the May Children’s Center’s program as high quality at the state and national levels.
