Fire Certification 2

Dual credit students from Columbia and Sweeny high schools learn the proper techniques of using a fire extinguisher during a fire training session at the BCPC Welding Technologies Lab at Brazosport College.

Dual credit welding students from Columbia and Sweeny high schools recently attended a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) performance testing event at Brazosport College.

The day-long event allowed students to complete NCCER certification testing on a variety of skills, such as Oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, thermal beveling using both Oxy-fuel and plasma, and carbon arc gouging. Successful completion of these performance skills earned students valuable industry certifications that will benefit them as they enter the job market.

“Our business and industry partnerships are invaluable to our training programs,” said Brazosport College Director of Workforce Development Beth Cassidy. “The businesses provide the relevance and expertise needed in strengthening our curriculum.”

On hand to facilitate and test fire watch and basic fire training skills were Darrien Batiste, representing Turner Industries, and Clute VFD Chief Mike Doucet.

“Turner Industries is proud to partner with Brazosport College on developing our future workforce,” said Carla Thompson, Workforce Development Manager for Turner Industries. “Teaching students real industry training holds great value for their futures.”

One of the day’s highlights was fire training. Batiste reviewed procedures that are required of someone performing hot work, stressing the importance of inspecting the work site before beginning hot work and obtaining a hot work permit. Doucet also presented information on classifications of fires and extinguishers, as well as the proper use of the extinguisher using the PASS Technique (pull, aim, squeeze, sweep).  A skills testing was also given that allowed students to demonstrate proper use and technique of extinguishing a fire.

The performance testing event was held at the BCPC Welding Technologies Lab at Brazosport College.
