'The Last Five Years' brings musical theater to Brazosport College

Brazosport College Theatre is excited to present its first musical of the 2021 spring semester, “The Last Five Years.”

The show, scheduled for Thursday, April 15 through Sunday, April 18, will be performed outside to a limited audience, as well as streamed live online. All four performances will be at 8 p.m. in The Shakespeare in the Glen Theatre at Brazosport College.

Written and composed by Jason Robert Brown, “The Last Five Years” is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two people who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backward, while Jamie, the man, revealing his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. 

Cast members include Samantha Blackmar, MaKayla Dunn, Mason Rod and Tomas Whitmarsh.

The show is directed by BC Drama Professor Michael McIntosh, while Houston-based musical director Clayton Roberts is contributing with piano and vocal coaching. Also assisting are Shannon Averett with costume design and Byron Gernand with lighting design.

“Musical theater at Brazosport College is taking a leap forward with this production of ‘The Last Five Years,’” McIntosh said. “We have a new creative team of current industry professionals, new instruments and lights, and the ability to stream the show to a world-wide audience.”

While the play is being offered for no cost, tickets are required and can be purchased through a link at brazosport.edu/drama. Both in-person and livestream tickets are currently available.

“The Last Five Years” was named one of TIME Magazine’s 10 best shows of 2001. A testament to the show’s longevity, and spurred by the show’s regional popularity, “The Last Five Years” enjoyed an Off-Broadway revival at Second Stage in 2013. A film adaptation was released in 2014, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.
