BC Community Band to perform with BC Guitar Ensemble on April 25

The Brazosport College Department of Music will host its Spring concert, featuring the College and Community Band with the BC Guitar Ensemble, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 25 at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The College and Community Band will be under the direction of Richard Birk, while John Calderon will direct the BC Guitar Ensemble. The performance is free to the public.

“Sunday’s concert will include a wide range of music, from band classics to symphonic transcriptions, as well Mexican and Brazilian folk song for guitar ensemble,” Birk said. “We think there will be something for everyone and it should be big fun for all. We hope the community will come join us for a great afternoon of music.”

Selections to be performed by the Community Band on April 25 include:

“March of the Belgian Paratroopers” — A classic band march by Pierre Leemans.

“The Lost Lady Found” ­— An English folk song from Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy.”

“Menuetto from Symphony No. 104” — From Franz Joseph Haydn’s “London” Symphony.

“Intermezzo from First Suite in Eb” — One of the movements from Gustav Holst’s most famous piece for band.

“Hungarian Dance No. 5” — An energetic dance by Joannes Brahms.

“River of Hope” — A beautiful arrangement of the Appalachian folk hymn, “Down to the River to Pray” by Michael Sweeney.

“Rhapsody in Blue” — George Gershwin’s concert jazz classic arranged for band.

“Classical Gas” — Mason Williams’ 1968 Grammy Award-winning song arranged for guitar and band.

All Brazosport College health and safety requirements will be in effect, including physical distancing and the wearing of face coverings.
