BC Department of Music registering for Opera Scenes Workshop

BC Department of Music registering for Opera Scenes Workshop

Fri Jun 4, 2021

The Brazosport College Department of Music is introducing an Opera Scenes Workshop this summer directed by BC voice teacher Abby Powell.

The workshop will consist of six sessions from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights beginning June 15 and ending July 20. The sessions will be in the choir room (MPC-101) at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The session is open to operatic novices, advanced performers and everyone in between. Ages 15 and up are welcome. At least one year of classical vocal study is required as a pre-requisite.

After taking the Opera Scenes Workshop students will learn invaluable skills for creating ensemble with other singers, as well as strong acting skills for stagecraft in opera. The course will also include a final performance.

Powell, who is teaching the workshop, studied voice at The Julliard School of Music in New York, where she was awarded the Rise Stevens Award, the G. & M. Grunin Prize and the Loretta Lewis Award in Voice, among others.

She has sung under the batons of James Conlon, Julius Rudel, Harry Bickett, Steven Osgood, Patrick Summers, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Sameer Patel, Neal Goren and Richard Bado, to name a few. Her operatic roles have included Juno (John Eccles' Semele), both Dido and The Sorceress (Purcell's Dido and Aeneas), Mêre Marie (Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites), Lyubasha (Rimsky-Korsakoff's The Tsar's Bride), Marcellina (Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro), Charlotte (Werther's Massenet), Brangaene (Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde), the title role in Bizet’s Carmen and many others.

The workshop costs $150 and a link to register is available on the Clarion website at brazosport.edu/clarion. For more information, call the Clarion Box Office at (979) 230-3156.
