BC Jazz Band & Jazz Singers set for fall concert on Oct. 12

Tue Oct 9, 2018

The Brazosport College Jazz Band and the Jazz Singers will take the stage for their first concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 12 at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The BC Jazz Band will be under the direction of Richard Birk, while John Calderon will direct the Jazz Singers.

“Our students have been working hard since the start of the semester and we’re excited to share a wide variety of music, ranging from jazz standards to more recent popular hits,” Birk said. “There’s something for everyone and we hope that folks will make it out to hear our talented students.”

Selections to be included in the concert are Eddie Harris’ funky jazz classic, “Cold Duck Time;” Clifford Brown’s hard-bop burner, “The Blues Walk;” Ray LaMontagne’s hit, “You Are the Best Thing,” featuring Jazz Singer Zack Doughty; Irving Berlin’s standard, “Blue Skies,” featuring Jazz Singer Jessica Clayton; trumpet section feature, “Bugle ‘n’ Boogie” by Rob Vuono, Jr.; Nat King Cole’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” featuring Jazz Singer Crissy Martinez; and the Motown classic, “My Girl,” featuring Jazz Singer Juan Villarreal.

In honor of Brazosport College’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Jazz Band & Jazz Singers will perform three pieces with connections to the year 1968 — the year the college was founded, including “Diggin’ on James Brown,” which is one of the iconic hits for the premier horn/funk band Tower of Power that was founded in 1968; an instrumental hit from 1968, “Grazin’ in the Grass” by South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela; and the No. 1 song from 1968, “Hey Jude” by the Beatles.

Admission to the concert is free and no tickets are required.
