BC Phi Theta Kappa group named one of the top chapters worldwide
Brazosport College’s Psi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently named one of the top chapters worldwide at the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst convention in Orlando, Fl. BC Phi Theta Kappa members attending the conference were, from left, advisor Cassie Bruner, Autumn Green, Sophie Winters, Jeniffer Alanis, Cristina DeHoyos, Zaundria Shanklin, Corina Balderas and advisor Alicia Hodge.
Brazosport College student Cristina DeHoyos was recently named a recipient of a 2019 Distinguished Chapter Officer Award at the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst convention in Orlando, Fl. She was one of only 31 chapter officers worldwide to receive this award.
Brazosport College Psi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently named one of the top chapters in the world at the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst convention in Orlando, Fl.
The BC chapter was named a 2019 Distinguished Chapter, which places the BC group among the top 40 out of approximately 1,300 chapters worldwide. This ranking also places them among the top eight chapters in Texas. Other Distinguished Chapters from Texas were Grayson College, Brookhaven College, Lone Star College – Kingwood, Collin College, North Lake College, Lone Star College – Montgomery and Trinity Valley Community College.
“To say that I am proud of this team would be an understatement,” said advisor Cassie Bruner. “The strong leadership on this team exemplifies the type of students Phi Theta Kappa strives to mold. Making sure to include the four PTK Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship in all that they do, these members have grown as scholars and leaders and showcase the amazing benefits of attending community college and being engaged academically and socially.”
BC student and chapter president Cristina DeHoyos also earned high recognition at the conference, as she was named a recipient of a 2019 Distinguished Chapter Officer Award. She was one of only 31 chapter officers to receive this award.
Chapter Officer awards are given based on the recipient’s demonstration of leadership, promotion of Honors in Action and other engagement in the Society, and enthusiasm for the Society’s Hallmarks. Proving how strong the chapter leadership is in Texas, 10 of the 31 award recipients were from Texas.
“Watching Cristina grow as a leader during her time as Chapter President has been a moment I will forever treasure,” Bruner said. “Psi Psi is so lucky to have her as president and will be leaving a lasting mark on our chapter for years to come.”
The BC group was also recognized as a REACH Chapter, which indicates that its membership acceptance rate exceeds 15 percent, which is higher than the national average. BC’s acceptance rate for last year was 27.2 percent, which exceeds the regional, divisional and international rates.
These awards came soon after the BC program made a strong showing last month at the PTK Regional Conference in Houston. During the regional conference, BC was named a Top Texas Chapter, a five-star chapter and was recognized as a Continued Excellence Chapter, as well as earning a College Project Award of Merit, an Honors of Action Award of Distinction and multiple individual awards.
