BC Theater to hold auditions for ‘The Girlhood of Shakespeare’s Heroines’

Thu May 6, 2021

Brazosport College Theatre is seeking actors for its Summer production, “The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines.”

Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 17 and Tuesday, May 18 at The Seidule Theatre on the Brazosport College campus. Due to health and safety precautions, those auditioning may be asked to wait in their car if the audition location is at capacity. Face masks or coverings are required inside Brazosport College buildings.

“The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines” is a comedy in which Shakespearean women, or modern women cast in Shakespearean roles, try to come to terms with their identity, their mixed feelings about men, and their place in the world. “Girlhood” offers a funny and compelling investigation into how to survive as a minor character.

“This is a great opportunity for adult actors to take on a fun challenge,” said BC Theatre Director Michael McIntosh. “Every role is fantastic and they are roles you can really sink your teeth into. We know about the lives and deaths of Ophelia, Lady Macbeth and other female Shakespearean characters, but what happened to them before or after the plays?

“As always, college credit and scholarships may be available for participation in BC productions,” he added.

The production will be performed July 30 through August 1 at The Clarion at Brazosport College to an in-person audience, as well as livestreamed. Rehearsals will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 12 to 29.

Five roles, all for adult actors, are available. Roles include:

  • Ophelia: Dead Men’s Fingers
  • Zoe: Axis Sally
  • Bonnie: How Many Children Had Lady Macbeth?
  • Mariana: Notes from the Moated Grange
  • Miranda: Full Fathom Five

To audition, please prepare a one-minute monologue. No Shakespeare. For those without a prepared monologue, one will be provided. Online audition forms also must be completed and are located at
