Library, Student Life team up to introduce BC Discovery Series

The Brazosport College Library and Department of Student Life are teaming up to bring a series of interesting and informational events to BC students throughout the fall semester.

Titled the BC Discovery Series, the new series will engage the BC community in various educational topics through cross-campus collaborations, speakers, and guests. Each fall and spring semester, the series will present knowledge on different subjects, encouraging participants to explore something new.

Three BC Discovery Series events are planned for the fall semester, including Constitution Day on Sept. 17, a Crime Prevention session on Oct. 3 and an event on Native American Heritage on Nov. 13. 

“The Library and Student Life are excited to partner to promote opportunities for life-long learning outside of the classroom, through the BC Discovery Series,” said BC Director of Student Life Kelli Forde Spiers. 

Upcoming Sept. 17, Constitution Day will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. Students are encouraged to drop by the library to learn about the U.S. Constitution and pick up a pocket-sized constitution. Students can also take a citizenship test, register to vote and enjoy a cupcake. Highlighting the event will be a presentation, “Intellectual Roots of the Constitution,” by BC professor David Sysma.

Next up, on Oct. 3, students can meet BC’s police officers and learn about crime prevention. From 8 to 10 a.m. college officers will be at the library enjoying conversation and donuts with students. Then, at 12:15 p.m., a panel of college safety personnel will discuss safety tips and answer questions.

Rounding out the fall semester BC Discovery Series will be a Native American Heritage session on Nov. 13. Tim Tingle, Choctaw author and storyteller, will be at the library at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. performing stories from “Walking the Choctaw Road” and a variety of other novels. All sessions will feature different stories.
