Summer Jazz Band to perform free concert July 3

The Brazosport College Department of Music will host a Summer Jazz Concert by the Brazosport College Summer Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3.

The concert is free and will be held at The Clarion at Brazosport College. 

“Come kick off the Fourth of July holiday with some of America’s classical music – jazz! We’ll be playing everything from jazz standards to brand new selections for contemporary jazz ensemble,” said BC Jazz Band Director Richard Birk. “There will be a little something for everybody.”

Selections to be performed by the BC Summer Jazz Band on July 3 include:

“Granada Smoothie” – a lively samba by Mark Taylor

“Blues in the Closet” – a jazz standard by bassist Oscar Pettiford

“Hour of Darkness” – a moody bolero by New York trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman

“Polka Dots and Moonbeams” – a gorgeous ballad originally performed by the Stan Kenton Orchestra

“The Fool on the Hill/Blackbird” – a quirky medley by Frank Mantooth of two Beatles’ hits

“The Groovemaster”  - a romping funk tune by tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer

“Flight to Nassau” - a burning Sammy Nestico original for the Count Basie Orchestra

“Bit of Heaven” – a medium swing tune from 1959 by trombonist Curtis Fuller

“(It’s Just) Talk” - a fusion classic by guitarist Pat Metheny

“American Patrol” – Glen Miller’s big band flag-waver
