Dec. 8: COVID-19 Update for Employees

Dec. 8: COVID-19 Update for Employees

Tue Dec 8, 2020 at 12:00 AM

Please take notice that the contract between BlueCross BlueShield of Texas (BCBSTX) and CommonSpirit Health is set to expire on December 16, 2020.  CommonSpirit owns 15 hospitals throughout Houston and East Texas, including CHI St. Luke's Health - Brazosport Hospital.  BCBSTX and CommonSpirit are in contract negotiations.  If they are unable to negotiate a new contract, CommonSpirit hospitals and doctors will no longer be part of the BCBSTX network as of December 16, 2020.  This means if you see CommonSpirit providers for non-emergency care after that date, services may be reimbursed at an out-of-network benefit level, which would have a higher out-of-pocket cost.  Please note that emergency care should continue to be treated as if it was in-network.  If you have an approved authorization at a CommonSpirit Health facility scheduled to occur after December 16, 2020 or need additional information, please call a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant at (800) 252-8039.

The annual employee holiday luncheon will be served in a to-go format on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.  While we’d love to socialize and celebrate the holiday season by traditional means, the purpose of the to-go format is to ensure the health and safety of our employees by observing the social distancing protocols put in place by the college.  Therefore, we ask that you take your meal to-go and refrain from gathering in groups to partake in the lunch.  If you are not feeling well or are in self-isolation due to exposure to COVID-19, please forgo participating in the employee holiday luncheon.

The Distinguished Alumni Committee is pleased to accept nominations for the 2020-2021 Distinguished Alumnus. Candidates for this honor must meet the following criteria:

  • Earned 42 or more semester credit hours at Brazosport College
  • Made outstanding contributions to their chosen vocation, their community, and or the public welfare

The Distinguished Alumni Committee depends upon the College community to help with suggestions for likely candidates. If you would like to nominate someone who meets the above criteria, please email their name and a brief summary of their qualifications to Dr. Shelley Diviney, Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs at by Friday, December 11, 2020.

The Fall 2020 semester is scheduled to proceed as originally planned with classes being held in their current modalities including face-to-face, blended, scheduled live online, and online. The scheduled Fall 2020 completion date is Friday, December 11, 2020 with grades being due by 10:00 a.m. The college will be closed for the winter holidays from December 21, 2020 through January 1, 2021. We continue to monitor global, state, and county COVID-19 metrics on a daily basis and follow the guidance of federal, state, and local health officials. The goal of Brazosport College is to complete the Fall semester while maintaining the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

Beginning January 4, 2021, events and meetings held in the Dow Academic Center, Corporate Learning Center, and The Clarion will resume. Keeping health and safety at the forefront, these facilities will be available for rent while following guidelines established by federal, state, and local authorities regarding the pandemic. Following guidance from Governor Greg Abbott’s Open Texas Minimum Standard Health Protocols Checklist, safety precautions include limiting the number of attendees to 75% occupancy, setting up events to promote social distancing, and having buffets fully served or individually plated meals. In addition, the College reserves the right, upon reasonable notice under the circumstances, to cancel or reschedule a rental based upon federal, state, or local government guidance due to the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic.

Brazosport College health screening process is online for all employees, students, and visitors who come to campus. You will need to fill out the questionnaire each day you intend on coming to the Brazosport College campus.  The COVID-19 Health Screening questionnaire can be accessed in English or Spanish by visiting  This questionnaire has been designed to be quick and simple to fill out, and can be easily accessed through all internet browsers, smartphones, and tablets.

Once completed, you will be shown either a green check mark with “APPROVED FOR ENTRY” if you have passed, or a red exclamation mark with “STAY HOME, STAY SAFE” if you failed, as well as your name, and the date you completed the questionnaire.

Brazosport College has increased focus on safety monitoring to promote safety protocols of social distancing, wearing a face mask/covering, practicing good hygiene, etc.  Once on campus, have either the confirmation email or confirmation screen of your completed questionnaire available as you may be asked at random to show proof of completing the self-screening tool.

Upon arrival to campus, you will be able to access all parking lots and enter campus through most entrances. To provide clarification, face masks/coverings are required for all students, employees, and visitors (ages 10 and up) any time on campus.  To clarify, face shields are not considered face masks/coverings. If an individual chooses to wear a face shield, the individual must also wear a face mask/covering which fully covers the mouth and nose except as allowed in the following exceptions. The exceptions are: if you are walking, running, or biking on the trails; if you are in your vehicle; if you are alone in your office with the door closed; if you are a welding student actively welding and wearing a welding face shield; and, if you are an instructor lecturing students, you may wear a face shield instead of a face mask in addition to maintaining 6ft. of distance.  Otherwise, all individuals, students, faculty, staff, grounds keepers and contractors are to wear a face mask/covering.

Anyone that does not pass the COVID-19 Health Screening questionnaire should not come to campus.  Everyone that passes should be prepared to show the confirmation email.

These procedures are subject to change, so it's vital that you check your Brazosport College email for updates before heading to campus.

For individuals needing to self-identify as affected by COVID-19 or notify Brazosport College of COVID-19 incidents involving students, faculty, or staff, please visit

Please note, the COVID-19 Contact/Exposure Report Form is separate and apart from the Health Screening Questionnaire.  The COVID-19 Contact/Exposure Form should be completed if you have been exposed to someone or if you have tested positive for COVID-19.
