The theme of the 2015 Gulf Coast Student Success Conference is Deep on The Coast of Texas: Shining Stars of Student Success. Following the call our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Brian Fallon, made in his 2011 address to National Council of Peer Tutors of Writing (NCPTW), the GCSSC seeks to provide a space for educators “to pay more attention to peer tutors, to what they tell us about learning [and] teaching.” Our aim, during this inaugural conference, is to provide a space for collaboration among the tutors, SI Leaders, and peer-support staff at our institutions. Through this collaboration and sharing of scholarship, we hope tutors, SI Leaders, and student mentors will work together to share and build theories and practices that are foundational to the work we all do in our tutoring centers. Our peer and professional tutors, SI Leaders, and mentors are the best people to discuss student learning and tutoring because they have made it their profession.  As Fallon asserts, tutors are our best teachers, and the GCSSC invites presentation proposals that showcase these shining stars of student success.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  •       Best practices in tutoring/SI,
  •       Training programs,
  •       Innovations in tutoring/SI,
  •       Individual Tutoring/SI,
  •       Group Tutoring/SI,
  •       Workshops,
  •       The role of the tutor/SI,
  •       and, anything else you can think of…

Break-out sessions will be populated with 50 minute presentations in one of these four presentation strands:

  •       Math Tutoring
  •       Writing Tutoring
  •       Supplemental Instruction
  •       Student Mentors

In keeping with our mission, the GCSSC provides a forum for tutors, SI leaders, and student mentors to share their practices, research, difficulties, and successes. While the GCSSC welcomes faculty, directors, coordinators, and administrators to attend, we prefer that they act as Chairs, Moderators, and/or Co-presenters with their tutors and student support staff. Individual and/or Panel presentations are acceptable.
